Penny loafers are definitely in right now, especially for the summer, but they’re a classic choice year-round and work for a variety of occasions. I love them with suits, business attire, or wedding outfits, but a lot of guys are rocking them with casual fits too for an elevated look. I wanted to get in on the action, so I did some research to find the best loafers for men. Here are the pairs I picked up and tested out. Hopefully, this helps you in your search for the perfect pair of loafers.
What are the best penny loafers for men?
My Favorite: Amberjack The Loafer

I’m a big fan of suede loafers, and for summer you really can’t beat them. These ones from Amberjack are fire. The colorway pairs perfectly with summer fits, whether you’re rocking linen pants or shorts. Out of all the pairs I tried, these are my favorite. Not only are they incredibly comfortable, but they’re also very affordable. If you’re looking for a casual pair of penny loafers that works with a ton of summer outfits, this is a great choice.
Beckett Simonon Cohen Loafers Tan
Now moving away from suede, here’s a pair of leather penny loafers that are a true wardrobe staple. They’ve been my go-to for weddings and suit outfits, and the color matches perfectly with my tan Ferragamo belt. These are made to order, which means they take about 2 to 3 months to arrive, but they were absolutely worth the wait.
Thursday Boots Lincoln Penny Loafer
Last but not least is another pair of brown leather loafers, the Lincoln penny loafer in rich mahogany. A dark brown pair is essential for dressier business occasions, but these also pair well with dark denim for a more casual look. I really like the style of these. One thing to note is that they run much narrower than the others I’ve tried, so if you prefer a slim fit, you’ll love them. If you have wide feet, be sure to adjust the width option when ordering.
Men’s Penny Loafers FAQs
What are penny loafers?
Penny loafers are basically a slip-on dress shoe with a strap, also called a saddle, across the top where laces would normally be. The saddle usually has a small slit, and back in the 1930s people would slip a penny in there, which is how they got the name penny loafer.
Should you wear socks with penny loafers?
I think penny loafers look best without socks or with no-show socks. That said, you can definitely wear dress socks with them too. In colder weather, dress socks or wool socks are a must for warmth and comfort.
How much should I spend on penny loafers?
Some fashion experts and publications like GQ will tell you to spend close to $1,000 on luxury brand loafers, but I don’t think that’s necessary. You can find high-quality, handcrafted loafers made with premium leather for under $300. The pairs on this list provide the perfect balance of quality, style, comfort, and affordability.
