If you love coffee, own a Keurig machine, and care about the environment then this article is for you. I personally own the Keurig Latte machine and for the longest time was using generic K-Cups from the grocery store but as someone who cares about sustainability, I realized that these K-Cups are probably not the best for landfills. While I do own their reusable K cup filter sometimes it’s just easier to quickly pop in a K cup. So I did some research to see where I can find compostable K-cups but still get a high-quality cup of coffee and below are my top 5 favorite compostable k cups that I’ve tried.

Best Overall: Caffe Borbone Positano Blend

Caffe Borbone Compostable K Cups

The Positano Blend from Caffe Borbone is my absolute favorite K-Cup. I recently took a trip to Naples, Italy and Caffe Borbone was everywhere. There is nothing like the Italian coffee shop experience so when I found out they offered k cups in the United States I was delighted. Not only do I get to feel like I’m back in Italy but it just so happens that all of their k cups are compostable. If you’re looking for an amazing coffee that will feel like you’re sitting at a local coffee shop in Italy, the Positano blend is a must-try.

Best Organic: Organic Compostable K Cups by San Francisco Bay Coffee

Organic Coffee Compostable K Cups by San Francisco Bay Coffee

If you’re looking for an organic compostable K-Cup the Breakfast Blend from SF Bay Coffee Co is a great choice. They use Certified USDA Organic Arabica coffee beans from Central America for this medium-light blend. With hints of French vanilla and toffee, it’s a flavorful, bold cup of joe. Their trademark OneCUP pods are totally compostable with a mesh paper filter, plant-based ring, and paper lid.

Best Half-Caff: Ischia Blend by Caffe Borbone

Ischia Blend - K-Cup® Machine Compatible Pods

While I love a morning cup of coffee a lot of times I like to save my caffeine for after lunch when I need a pick me up. However, I’ve found that a regular cup of coffee in the afternoon sometimes keeps me up all night. That’s why I love the Ischia blend from Caffe Borbone. It delivers the high-quality Italian coffee experience that I love but with half the amount of caffeine. Ischia is also one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever visited so anything that reminds me of my trip always gets bonus points.

Best Variety of Flavors: Cameron’s Coffee Single Serve Pods

Chocolate Caramel Brownie Compostable K Cups by Cameron's Coffee

As much as I love a good premium cup of black coffee, I do have a sweet tooth and love to mix in some fun flavors every now and again. If you’re looking for some unique flavors and still want a compostable K Cup, Cameron’s is one of the best brands I’ve come across. Chocolate Caramel Brownie, Cinnamon Sugar Cookie, Toasted Southern Pecan, and Vanilla Hazelnut are just a few of their tasty flavors. They use similar packaging to SF Bay Coffee Co which has a paper filter and lid. They only come in 12 packs on Amazon though making them slightly more expensive per unit.

Compostable K Cup FAQ’s

How do you use compostable K-Cups?

The best part about compostable K-Cups are that they can be used exactly the same way as normal K-Cups. Simply turn on your Keurig, pop them in, and start brewing.

How do you dispose of compostable K-Cups?

Disposing of your compostable K-Cups should be done in a compostable environment. If you have a local compost facility or a compost pile in your yard this is where you should dispose of your K-Cups. If you don’t have that, you can put them in the trash with everything else but they may not compost correctly which kind of defeats the purpose.

What is the difference between biodegradable and compostable K-Cups?

All compostable K-Cups are biodegradable but not all biodegradable K-Cups are compostable. Biodegradable simply means that the materials will eventually break down over time in natural environments but there isn’t a specific timeframe of when they will break down or if they will break down into harmless substances. Compostable K-Cups can break down into natural elements quickly when done in a proper composting environment.

Do compostable K-Cups break down in a landfill?

Compostable K-Cups may or may not break down in a landfill. Landfills often don’t have enough oxygen and microbial activity needed for compostable items to break down effectively so it’s recommended that you dispose of your compostable K-Cups in a compost-friendly environment.
