As an NFL offensive lineman, I’m always looking for high-protein snacks to fill the gaps between my meals, and beef jerky is always a go-to. After spending a long time trying different brands, I decided to do a comprehensive review, test them all, and rank my favorites so I can share with you which ones are truly the best beef jerky and who holds the crown.

How I Ranked the Best Beef Jerky Brands

I don’t like to overcomplicate things. For me, it’s simple. First, how good does it taste? I also factor in texture and consistency as part of the overall taste score. Second, what’s the value? How much is the price compared to what I’m getting?

I combine those two scores to create an overall ranking and determine the best bang for your buck.

Best Beef Jerky Brands rankings chart

Old Trapper Beef Jerky (Old Fashioned) (8.75/10)

Old Trapper Beef Jerky (Old Fashioned)

Topping the list are the guys over at Old Trapper. While they ranked second in taste for me, it was very moist which is great. However it was the price that really boosted their score. At $1.50 per ounce, there isn’t another deal that comes close in terms of a high-quality product at a great price per ounce.

Archer Grass Fed Beef Jerky (Original) (8.5/10)

Next up is Archer, which was actually my favorite overall in terms of taste. They have the softest, most tender jerky, and it was very easy to chew, which is huge. Especially when looking at more original jerky flavors, tenderness is key. They are also pretty modestly priced at $2.14 per ounce.

Jack Link’s Beef Jerky (Original) (7.5/10)

Jack Link's Original Beef Jerky

Jack Link’s is an OG, and for good reason. They have a solid product. Funny enough, they ranked last on taste for me, but that doesn’t mean it’s bad by any means. There’s just fierce competition.

When it comes to price per ounce, they were number two, and that’s important for a big guy like me trying to get the most protein at the best price.

Tillamook Beef Jerky (Original) (7.25/10)

Tillamook Beef Jerky (Original)

Tillamook makes a solid beef jerky. They have a great smoky flavor, so if you are looking for something with that smoky taste, this one is right for you. It also has 14g of protein per serving, which was the second highest on the list, so that’s another positive.

Hardtimes Handcrafted Beef Jerky (Original) (7.25/10)

Hardtimes Handcrafted Beef Jerky (original)

If you like a more brittle jerky, then you may like Hard Times. It also has a nice smoky flavor and is a nice change-up if you’re looking for something thinner and more crisp.

NoMans Land Beef Jerky (Mild) (6.5/10)

NoMans Land Beef Jerky (Mild)

This one is good, but I tried the hot version, which for me was a bit too spicy. It was also pretty tough. I prefer something more tender. If you’re into the heat, then check it out.
