Best Overall: Athletic Fit Stretch Blazers by State & Liberty

State & Liberty Athletic Fit Blazer in blue plaid colorway

When it comes to athletic fit dress clothes nobody does it like State & Liberty. These guys literally started their company because nobody else was doing a good job at creating athletic-fit dress clothing for men. So it’s no wonder they take our top spot as the best athletic fit blazers for men. Their stretch-fit blazers are unlike any dress coat you’ve ever worn. They are tapered perfectly so you get that slim-fitting athletic look but at the same time they use stretch fit fabrics so there are absolutely no restrictions and you don’t feel like you’re going to rip the coat when you make movements. Plus, they are super breathable, light, and moisture wicking which makes them great for all seasons. I own the navy blue version but am a huge fan of this blue plaid colorway (my younger brother owns this color). I’m about six foot tall, one hundred and eighty pounds, and typically wear Medium or Large tops. The size 40 blazer fit me perfectly off the rack. I’m telling you get spend the money with State & Liberty and you will not regret it. Here is our full State & Liberty review if you want to check it out.

Best Value: Performance Blazer by Twillory

Navy Houndstooth Performance Blazer by Twillory

By far the most affordable option on our list is the Performance Blazer by Twillory. The Performance Blazer is a fantastic value as it offers all of the same features that you will find in the State & Liberty blazer but at about half the cost. It uses 100% Japanese stretch fabric giving you that full range of unrestricted motion that we are all looking for here. Again, I went with a size 40 and this fit me great off the rack with no tailoring needed. When I say off the rack what I really mean is delivered right to my door as that is how this came in a nice suit bag along with a quality hanger. This blazer also has a couple of unique features that some of the others on this list don’t have. I got the Navy Houndstooth color and the chest pocket featured a built-in pocket square that matched perfectly with their Advancer Performance Blue dress shirt. There is also a zipper pocket on the inside which is great for anything you want to keep secure like small keys or credit cards. This blazer is perfect for anyone looking for a solid athletic fit blazer but doesn’t want to break the bank. Also, a great option for someone who is wearing blazers a lot as they have 15 different color choices.

Best Light Blue: Hartley Cotton Stretch Light Blue Blazer by Indochino

Hartley Cotton Stretch Light Blue Blazer close up image

Coming in as the best light blue option is this stretch-fit blazer from Indochino. I like this blazer because it utilizes stretch-fit materials similar to State & Liberty. This suit is made with 97% cotton and 3% spandex so it isn’t going to give you quite the same stretch as State & Liberty blazers which are made with a wool, polyester, and spandex blend but it still delivers enough stretch to be included in the category. I’m also a huge fan of this light blue color which is great for spring and summer vibes. When it comes to the fit, Indochino provides a custom fit made to your measurements which they offer for free. So if you have an athletic body type then you should be good so long as you get your measurements right. If you’re looking for something similar to State & Liberty but for a slightly lower price then this blazer is worth checking out.

Best Italian Stretch Blazer: Navy Havana Suit by Suitsupply

Navy Havana athletic fit stretch suit by Suitsupply

If you’re of Italian descent like me and you’re really wanting an athletic-fitting blazer that was stitched in Italy then this one right here is worth checking out. For $499 you can get the entire Navy Havana Suit from Suitsupply. This athletic fit suit uses stretch wool which is a mixture of 98.4% wool and 1.6% elastane so it still has that traditional heavy wool feel but the elastane gives it that bit of stretch to provide added comfort. This suit does have a slim fit taper to it as well which will bode well for us guys who are looking to show off our athletic physiques. Overall, this is a very solid athletic fit option at a pretty good price point. Check out my LA Weekly article if you are looking for other athletic fit suits to review.

Best Athletic Fit Blazer for Winter: The Di Pray Textured Wool Waverly Jacket

Best athletic fit blazer for winter, The Di Pray Textured Wool Waverly Jacket

Next on our list is The Di Pray Textured Wool Waverly Jacket by Proper Cloth. This is another Italian wool suit jacket but this one is specifically made with 100% Merino wool which is widely popular for its temperature-regulating qualities. We like this blazer for winter because it’s a little bit heavier than some of the other athletic fit options listed above and has a rich dark green color. Dark green integrates well in both casual and formal attire for winter. Throw this blazer over some stretch-fit navy jeans with a nice sweater and you’ve got yourself a very cozy business casual look going. Also, you can now get this at a discount by clicking the link below and using our Proper Cloth discount code (TGL10) at checkout!

Best Heritage Brand: Milano Slim-Fit Hopsack Blazer

Milano Slim-Fit Hopsack Blazer by Brooks Brothers

Last but not least on our list is the Milano Slim-Fit Hopsack Blazer by Brooks Brothers. If you are someone who is trying to flex by saying you’re wearing a blazer from a well-known heritage brand then this is going to be your best athletic fitting option. Brooks Brother is a brand that has been around forever it seems. The brand was founded in 1818, so they have made it through pretty much every era of fashion and have stood as a leader in luxury fashion despite so many different trends. They have managed to keep up with the times here once again by creating the slim Milano cut which replicates an athletic fit. They use 99% wool and 1% elastane in this blazer so it’s probably the least stretchy of the lot here but still will provide some give.

Questions about Athletic Fit Blazers

What is an athletic fit blazer?

An athletic fit blazer is similar to a slim fit blazer in that it should hug your body tightly. The goal is to avoid that boxy, unappealing look that many standard fit off-the-rack suit jackets offer. The main difference in athletic fit vs. slim fit is that athletic fitting blazers are more tapered and give more space in the chest, upper arms, and shoulders to accommodate the muscles that men with athletic builds possess.

How should an athletic fit blazer fit?

Athletic fit blazers should fit snugly and should look to be tapered to your body.

How do I know if I need an athletic fit blazer?

If you have an athletic body type then odds are you are going to want an athletic fit blazer. If you are someone who lifts weights often and takes care of their body then you likely have a strong chest, shoulders, and arms but a slim waist and will need an athletic fit blazer. Let’s say you are 6 foot tall and 180 pounds or 6′ 3″ and weigh 215 lbs then you are likely an athletic fit. If you played sports your whole life and still exercise, you likely are an athletic fit.

What should I look for when buying an athletic fit blazer?

In my opinion, there are two things that make a great athletic fit blazer. The first thing an athletic-fit blazer should have is a tapered fit. The blazer should give space in the upper body and taper down around the waist. The second thing is quality performance or stretch-fit fabrics. Performance or stretch-fit fabrics are typically a mix of cotton or wool combined with spandex, polyester, and or elastane. The stretch fabric is important because it allows you to get a tight-fitting suit that isn’t uncomfortable. Brands like State & Liberty have mastered the performance fabric blend providing for an incredibly tapered yet comfortable and breathable suit jacket.

Can I wear an athletic fit blazer to a formal occasion?

You can absolutely wear an athletic fit blazer to a formal occasion. Formal occasions are all about looking your best and if you have an athletic-fit body type you will only look good in an athletic fitting blazer as traditional fits will give you a loose and unappealing relaxed look.

How should I care for an athletic fit blazer?

Every brand is going to have different care instructions so I recommend checking the label and the company’s website for proper care instructions. One thing I will note though is that if you have the right brand, like State & Liberty, caring for your athletic fit blazer is super easy and convenient. I have worn and traveled with my State & Liberty countless times and still have never needed to get it dry cleaned or even iron it. Thanks to the stretch fit wrinkle resistant fabrics all I do is hang it up and it’s as good as new every time.
